History

The Building

Born in Tilt Cove, Notre Dame Bay, Frederick Augustus Colbourne (1910–1989) was one of the most creative architects in Newfoundland during his time. He also became a founding member of the Newfoundland Association of Architects.

The Macpherson Academy project was one of Colbourne’s designs – constructed in 1948 – built in cast-in-place concrete. The building had traditional detailing but used small, regularly spaced recessed squares on the arches above doors and in panels between windows (a detail that has been preserved in our modernization of the building).

________

The Macpherson Name

The Honourable Harold Macpherson was a businessman born in St. John’s, NL and president of The Royal Stores from 1921–1963. Macpherson also dedicated his time to following his families’ interest in education as he served on several boards and in various community efforts including the Legislative Council of Newfoundland. Harold also was an animal lover and passionate breeder of Newfoundland dogs (Westerland Kennels). Amazingly, facing extinction, the breed survived in Newfoundland due in large part to Harold’s efforts.

Harold was a generous man and bestowed the land along Rennie’s River to the city for use as a park and swimming area. Macpherson Academy, opened officially in 1949, was named in his honour. Harold was very supportive of the students at the academy and he was regarded with affection by many.
